Yummy Hot Meal in 3 Minutes for Cold Days!!!

Yummy Hot Meal in 3 Minutes for Cold Days!!!

Pre-med, Pre-dental, pre-health, The Best You PAL Academy

I grew up in the warm south, but moved north at 19.  And was instantly cold … for years.  LOL.  It wasn’t until I met my husband when I was 28 that he introduced me to this yummy go-to meal for warming up on cold days.  For us, it’s a fall and winter staple, and all this time, I’ve been thinking all northerners ate it.  But I asked around, and apparently not.  So, in case you don’t know, I’m going to share it with you, so you can be warm, too!!!

Paul, my husband, calls it Hot Shredded Wheat.  I call it yummy and Hot Wheat Pucks!  I like my name better.  LOL.  Hot Wheat Pucks is the easiest thing in the world to make, and something I would have never thought of on my own in a million years.  All you do is heat up milk, then add as many wheat pucks as you like, and top with cinnamon.  It’s delicious!!!  But, just in case, you’d like some more guidance for specificity, I’m gonna treat it like a recipe.

Hot Wheat Pucks, getting started. The Best You PAL Academy Pre-med Pre-dental Pre-health

What you’ll need:

  • Your favorite microwavable bowl and a spoon
  • 2 1/2 – 3 cups milk
  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups shredded whole wheat
  • 1/4-ish tsp of cinnamon
  • microwave
  • about 3 minutes to cook and time to eat!!!

Pour your milk into your bowl, and heat in microwave for about 3 minutes (consider stirring halfway through the heating time).  Add as many wheat pucks as you like.  Top with as much cinnamon as you like.  Devour!

Just to let you know, it’s normal that your wheat pucks will fall apart in the milk, which kind of turns it into a delicious soupy slop.  Sounds questionable, but it’s SO GOOD!!!

Additions for your consideration:

  • finely chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans for crunch, taste, and additional nutrients (especially essential fatty acids, minerals, and with walnuts, vitamin E!!!!)
  • a pat of butter (Paul likes his with butter, but I omitted it from my recipe years ago … it wasn’t my thing, but it might be yours!)
  • a small splash of vanilla extract … mmm, vanilla, milk, and cinnamon???? Heaven!!!!

So as we’re health loving SQUEE Peeps here, let’s talk nutritional benefits of this delightful meal!!!

Now I like my milk skim.  Digestion-wise, I don’t tolerate the heavier fat milks well, but drinking skim and having the fat taken out causes a lil’ bit of a problem.  Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin (which means it needs fat to be absorbed by the body, so it can do its job), and it has been added to milk because it’s necessary for calcium absorption.  So when you take the fat away, the vitamin D doesn’t get what it needs to help calcium, and you don’t absorb your calcium very well.  (Plus, vitamin D is awesome for your immune system, so you want to be able to absorb it for all its goodness!!!)  So if you’re like me and you like/need/prefer skim milk, then all you have to do is add a little good fat to this meal.  Perhaps those nuts or that pat of butter I mentioned as additions for your consideration?  Or maybe a handful of almonds to munch on while you wait for your milk to warm up?  (I keep almonds around ALL. THE.  TIME. for healthy munching and getting my essential fatty acids as well as vitamin E!).  But also, you could consider taking a flaxseed supplement.  That’s another thing I do.  Flaxseed oil is AWESOME!!! Think super healthy essential fatty acids (great Omegas 3, 6, and 9) and super anti-inflammatory!!!  So good for you!!!

So … what does milk give you?  Complete protein (which is a big deal!!!), calcium, and vitamin D … also, some potassium!  It’s protein fuel for your day!!!  ENERGY!!!!  And it makes sure you are getting your essential amino acids!!!  Yes, please!!!  (If you haven’t taken your biochem course(s) yet, you’ll learn all about these for sure then, but if you’re curious now, read this helpful info page published by the FDA!

Also for milk, if you’re an almond milk, soy milk, or other kind of milk person … certainly … feel free to try the substitution.  I can’t speak to the yumminess, though, cuz it’s not my thing.  But give it a try, and maybe you’ll have a new favorite on your hands!!!

Whole Wheat Pucks:

Now, I know that wheat, for many, is the bad guy … but … unless you have a wheat related health issue (in which case … run far and fast away from this dish!!!) … otherwise, organic whole grains are generally uber beneficial with nutrition.  And whole wheat offers you: FIBER!!! (comes from the bran!!!), and lots of B vitamins (excellent for your brain, hair, skin, nails, energy levels … need I go on???), and minerals like: zinc, iron, magnesium, and manganese!!!  We’re talking good stuff here!!!  We’re talking improving digestion, lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, helping to control weight gain, helping to redistribute fat in your body for a healthier distribution, giving you feelings of fullness, helping to regulate blood sugars, … delicious, nutritious goodness!!!  BUT … make sure you’re eating ORGANIC and WHOLE grain wheat pucks.  That’s why I went with the Kashi Organic Autumn Wheat cereal (and as a special note to all cereal producers … I would really love an organic whole wheat puck WITHOUT any added sugar!!!  Thanks in advance!!!).

For those of you who would like to know more about whole grains and why you want to eat them and why you want the organic ones … read this AWESOME post by the SPECTACULAR WELLNESS MAMA blog!!!  This chick knows her stuff, and she has written a wonderful and informative post about whole grain with a focus on whole wheat.  She’ll give you the low down!!!  CLICK HERE to read the post!!!

Cinnamon is a miracle in a spice bottle!!!!  It’s a high source of antioxidants; it’s anti-inflammatory; it protects the heart; fights diabetes, helps protect brain function; and this list goes on … and it’s ridickerously tasty!!!  Dr. Axe has written a super informative post about the health benefits of cinnamon!  He’s all about health and using food as medicine to promote health; like me!  Check out the post!!!  He knows SO MUCH!!!  CLICK HERE to read!!!

And that’s it!  A hot, uber yummy, super nutritious meal to warm you and nourish you as you trek out into these chilly fall and winter mornings!!!  Oh, and don’t forget … FAST!!!  Remember to take care of you, so you can take care of others!!!

Have a fabulous, healthy day!!!  Good luck with your studies.  Learn lots with your brain fueled on goodness!!!
